The Harvey Girl Experience
The Fred Harvey Company allowed young women to support themselves and live adventurously in a way that wasn’t possible before Mr. Harvey partnered with the ATSF to offer dining and hospitality options for passengers.
The North end of the Depot building was home to the Harvey House Hotel and the dormitories for the Harvey Girls employed in Amarillo. Restoring the dorm rooms to their original configuration and appropriately furnishing them will allow museum guests to see and feel what life was like for these young women. We plan to offer retreats and seminars for guests who would like to experience life as a Harvey Girl for a few days.
Guests can also stay in one of the restored Harvey House hotel rooms. This boutique hotel will allow guests to spend a few nights in a unique historic property and understand life in Amarillo one hundred years ago. As one of the few Harvey houses built in the same structure as the Depot, this niche hotel will be a unique cultural experience.
